Polyurethane (PU) System
Polyurethane (PU) System
What is Polyurethane?
Polyurethane (commonly abbreviated as PU) is a type of polymer composed of urethane linkages formed by the reaction of at least two different types of monomers. Generally, it is produced through the reaction of polyols with diisocyanates or polymeric isocyanates in the presence of suitable catalysts. Most polyurethanes are thermoset plastics, meaning they cannot be melted down and reshaped. Materials incorporating polyurethane are valued for their distinctive properties, such as toughness, hardness, and density.
Types of products made from Polyurethane
Flexible foam: Low-density foam that is pliable and capable of returning to its original shape after compression or deformation. It is commonly used in furniture, seat cushions, armchairs, mattresses, and vehicle seating (cars, motorcycles, etc.).
Rigid foam: Low-density foam with excellent thermal insulation properties. It is frequently used for insulation in vehicles, walls, and roofing, as well as in the manufacture of synthetic wood and decorative moldings.
Soft elastomers: Typically used in applications such as rubber sheets. Industrial rollers, rubber wheels, etc.
Rigid plastics are commonly used in the manufacture of electronic devices.
Additionally, polyurethane is used as a coating for wooden furniture. Its excellent resistance to chemicals and scratches helps protect the wood from damage, maintaining its aesthetic appeal throughout its lifespan and effectively extending the furniture’s durability.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Polyurethane
Advantages: Polyurethane is a versatile polymer that can be formulated into soft, rigid, or foam forms, allowing for a wide range of applications tailored to specific needs.
Disadvantages: Polyurethane is highly flammable. Upon combustion, it generates intense heat and dense smoke. Crucially, it releases toxic gases such as dioxins, isocyanates, hydrogen cyanide, and carbon dioxide.
