Silicone for the Textile Industry (textile)
Silicone for the Textile Industry (textile)
Silicone is a popular material used to manufacture a wide variety of everyday products. It exists in both liquid and solid forms;at low molecular weights, silicone behaves as a liquid, whereas higher molecular weights result in increased viscosity or a solid state. Silicone offers excellent resistance to heat and temperature fluctuations, serves as an electrical insulator, and is chemically inert. In its solid form, it is both strong and flexible, making it suitable for diverse applications—ranging from construction, industry, and medicine to consumer goods—or as an additive to enhance fabric properties.
Chemically, silicone is a synthetic polymer produced via condensation polymerization. It is based on the inorganic element silicon (Si), derived from silicon dioxide (SiO2). Its fundamental structure is methyl silicone—or polydimethylsiloxane—which incorporates oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon into its molecular composition. Through advanced technology, Wacker can incorporate various molecules into the silicone to modify its chemical and mechanical properties, creating unique capabilities tailored to specific applications.
Benefits of Silicone in the Textile Industry
In the textile industry, silicone is used to impart softness to fabrics. It is suitable for use with synthetic fibers (such as nylon, polyester, and acrylic), natural fibers (such as cotton, silk, linen, and wool), and semi-synthetic fibers (such as rayon, which is derived from natural cellulose). Beyond softening fabrics, silicone serves as a defoaming agent in processes such as bleaching, dyeing, printing, finishing, and wastewater treatment. Advances in technology now allow for the production of silicones with specialized properties tailored for textiles; for instance, silicone rubber can be used for printing on synthetic fabrics, offering a safer alternative to PVC, which poses risks to both users and the environment. Additionally, silicone can enhance synthetic fabrics by improving moisture absorption, resulting in a comfortable feel comparable to natural fibers.
Types of Silicone in the Textile Industry
Silicones used in the textile industry in Thailand can be categorized into three main types based on their application:
Silicone defoamers: Used to reduce foam generated during fabric manufacturing and wastewater treatment processes.
Silicone softeners: Used to soften fabrics across all fiber types; these are further subdivided into two categories:
Water-repellent (hydrophobic) silicone
Water-absorbent (hydrophilic) silicone
Silicone rubber: Used for fabric printing applications.

Selecting Silicone for Textile Applications
Determine the intended purpose of use.
Identify the fabric type.
Assess the manufacturing process and the production equipment used. Choosing the Right Silicone
Silicone for Fabric Softeners
Using silicone as a fabric softener offers significant advantages: it requires only a small dosage to achieve exceptional softness and smoothness, provides superior wash durability compared to other types of softeners, and ensures a comfortable feel when worn. However, there are potential downsides;improper selection or application can lead to “silicone spots”—stains that damage the fabric and are difficult to remove.
Silicone for Printing
Fabric printing traditionally relied on PVC-based materials. However, due to bans resulting from their toxicity to humans and the environment, silicone rubber has been developed as a safe, eco-friendly alternative for both users and the planet.
