Sodium Citrate

Common Name: Sodium Citrate
Chemical Name: Sodium Citrate, Trisodium Citrate
CAS No.: 6132-04-3
INS No.: 331 (iii)
E-number: 331 (iii)

Sodium Citrate is a food additive widely used in the food and beverage industry. It functions as a buffering agent and can help inhibit or slow microbial acid fermentation and reduce food deterioration.

Sodium Citrate is supplied as colorless, odorless crystals or powder with a salty taste. It is produced through fermentation of starch-rich agricultural materials. Products available on the market are generally divided into two main forms:

Sodium Citrate Dihydrate: contains two water molecules; CAS No. 6132-04-3.

Sodium Citrate Anhydrous: contains no water molecules; CAS No. 68-04-2.

Tinnakorn Chemical & Supply distributes Sodium Citrate Dihydrate suitable for pharmaceutical and food applications from Gadot Biochemicals, Israel, a globally recognized producer with extensive experience. Both coarse and fine grades are available for different product requirements.

Our Trisodium Citrate is certified Kosher for Passover and Halal, supporting reliable quality and worldwide distribution.

Food, Beverage & Supplement

  • Helps control product acidity and alkalinity while also enhancing salty taste. Typical applications include jelly, jam, confectionery, ice cream, soft drinks, milk powder, wine, cheese, and energy drinks.
  • Functions as a stabilizer by helping prevent rennet-induced curd formation in milk. Rennet breaks down kappa-casein into smaller molecules, which can then combine with calcium ions and form an undesirable cloudy white precipitate in some products.
  • In infant-formula products, sodium citrate can help prevent the formation of large, hard milk curds that may be difficult to digest.
  • Helps prevent discoloration and undesirable odors in trimmed meat products.

Medical

  • Used as an anticoagulant in blood-collection tubes and for preserving blood in blood banks. Citrate ions bind calcium ions to form a calcium-citrate complex, interfering with the blood-clotting mechanism.
  • Used to relieve symptoms associated with urinary-tract infections and to reduce urine acidity.
  • May be used as a laxative or as an antacid.

Cosmetic

  • Healthy skin is normally slightly acidic, generally within pH 4–6. This acidity helps protect the skin from environmental pollutants, allergens, dust, and bacteria that may contribute to irritation, acne, and wrinkles.
  • Sodium citrate is added to skin-care and cosmetic products to control pH and make formulations suitable for facial and body use.
  • It may also function as a preservative in products with a pH of approximately 3–6.2, helping protect formulations from microorganisms and contamination during everyday consumer use.
