Taurine

Common Name: Taurine
Chemical Name: Taurine, 2-Aminoethanesulfonic Acid
INS No.: –
E-number: –
CAS No.: 107-35-7
Functional use: Amino acid

Taurine is an amino acid found in high concentrations in nerve cells, heart muscle, the retina, the brain, and blood cells known as platelets. The human body can produce taurine, but production tends to decline with age. Taurine supports many bodily functions. It is important for development of the nervous system, especially the brain of newborns; promotes growth; provides antioxidant activity; helps reduce blood cholesterol; supports stress relief; helps regulate the heartbeat and maintain healthy heart function; supports vision and retinal light reception; assists calcium function; and helps reduce platelet aggregation. Taurine is commonly added to energy drinks, nutritional beverages, dietary supplements, and pet food.

Taurine is a neutral amino acid and a colorless crystalline compound. It dissolves readily in water, has a slightly acidic taste, and occurs as a free amino acid in tissues such as muscle, platelets, and the developing brain.

Food, Beverage & Supplement

Taurine is used as a source of the amino acid taurine in a wide range of products, including foods, energy drinks, dietary supplements, infant nutrition, and nutritional products for at-risk groups.

Potential benefits of taurine include:

  • Helps reduce fatigue and support alertness during the day.
  • Supports eye health and helps protect the retina.
  • Provides antioxidant activity.
  • Supports nervous-system development.
  • Supports normal cellular function.
  • Helps with detoxification and fluid regulation in organs.
  • Helps regulate calcium levels in the heart and may help prevent calcium overload.
  • Supports healthy blood pressure, circulation, and blood cholesterol levels.

Pet food

Used in pet food for animals such as cats and dogs.

Taurine is an essential amino acid for cats because, unlike humans and dogs, cats cannot synthesize sufficient taurine. Deficiency may contribute to retinal degeneration, cardiomyopathy, or blindness.

Benefits of taurine supplementation in cat food include:

  • Supports healthy vision.
  • Supports normal reproductive function.
  • Provides antioxidant protection for cells and may help counter age-related damage.
  • Supports normal heart function.
  • Helps support the skin’s defenses against bacterial infection.
