Polyethylene Glycol, or PEG for short, is a chemical substance used as a solvent for other materials—particularly in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics—and is also utilized as a food additive.
PEG 3350 and PEG 4000 are widely used as laxatives; they soften stool to facilitate bowel movements. PEG is also used as an anti-foaming agent in food products.
